Coloured pencils are made from pigment bound in wax, and sometimes with a little oil, and then encased in wood. They can be blended and applied either lightly or boldly. I currently use three different coloured pencils – Caran d’Ache Luminance pencils, Caran d’Ache Pablo pencils, and Faber Castell Polychromos. They produce highly detailed and realistic drawings, and because they require layers, the process is longer than ordinary graphite.

Faber Castell Polychromos are the finest oil-based colour pencils, and has a range of 120 colours; the Pablo pencils are suited for realist drawing due to their precision and lightfastness of the 120 different colour leads, and the Luminance pencils have a subtle velvety effect.
